What you are about to experience is, we hope, dramatically different than any other healthcare practice you have encountered before. In this introduction we'd like to let you know what you can expect from our relationship and why this practice model will help you achieve optimal wellness.
As a field, osteopathy is a healthcare philosophy that the body is a unit and must be allowed to heal itself. We as physicians can aid in that process, but that even if left alone, the tendency is toward homeostasis and balance. Barriers to health, healing, and proper function include poor nutrition, trauma, toxins, stress, infection, and poor overall health. My approach to this natural process is to assist the structure of the body so that it may heal properly and regain its intended function. I do so by gentle hands-on treatments (OMT) but also by taking a detailed history so that we can identify and modify external influences and stressors that may be contributing to your disease process or injury.
The initial evaluation will take place with one of our osteopathic physicians. We will spend some time getting to know your medical, surgical, medication, family, social and functional lifestyle history as they are crucial in understanding why you are the way you are. The history is also helpful in developing treatment plans that will work for you. We will ask you to do a self-assessment in the areas of physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
We will then perform a thorough structural exam looking for areas of asymmetry, muscle spasm, tissue texture changes, inflammation, fluid retention, abnormal range of motion.
After the initial exam, you will most likely receive a whole body treatment aimed at restoring symmetry and reducing overall stress on the body and mind. Together we will examine your self-assessment, set goals for the various aspects of your life and develop a plan to help you achieve those goals.
We will also develop a plan that will include other synergistic techniques and practices. These include vitamin supplementation, acupuncture, reiki, reflexology, medical massage, exercise and nutrition evaluations, physical therapy, counseling, palliative care, hypnotherapy, special classes and workshops. In doing so, we attack your medical, physical and emotional problems from every angle giving us the best chance for success.
At the end of your visit, you will be given health literature regarding your condition and/or medications/supplements. We will send you an email invitation to log into our Patient Health Record so that you can see certain aspects of your medical chart.
You will have the opportunity to learn more about other practitioners in the group, set your schedule for follow-up and sign up for any classes or workshops that interest you.
You will be able to contact your physician or our nurse practitioner in between visits if you have any questions. Our website also contains important follow-up information and videos.
All of the practitioners involved in your care meet regularly to update one another on your progress. Dr. Hugelmeyer will also be sending a consult letter or progress note to your primary care doctor so that he or she is aware of our plan.
The relationship we form at the first visit lays the foundation for a successful wellness program.
We appreciate you trusting us to care for you and your family.
