An Important Update from Dr. Hugelmeyer

Happy New Year! We hope you had a restful holiday
and are off to a healthy 2015.

I'm reaching out to update you on some changes you may encounter when scheduling appointments. Many of you already know that I am expecting in March and will be out for maternity leave in April and May. My return date is yet to be determined and will depend on my recovery from a planned C-section. I will keep you informed by email, Facebook and our website.
My own doctors have instructed me to avoid any and all physically strenuous practices due to the nature of my pregnancy. As such, I will NOT be doing hands-on treatments for the time being. I WILL still be available for medical follow-ups, general wellness, bioidentical hormone therapy and bloodwork review. Some patients who were booked with me have already been moved to see other practitioners for hands-on OMT, which has opened up my availability for medical visits.
In addition to our current physicians Dr. Charles DeFraia, Dr. Amy Suessle, Dr. John-Paul Bettencourt and Dr. John Villacci, we are fortunate to have TWO additional doctors joining us….
Dr. Kevin Weiss will start January 12th. He is fellowship trained in Osteopathic and Musculoskeletal Medicine and is also skilled in natural pain management techniques including prolotherapy and PRP. Dr. Weiss will be available to cover hands-on treatments for those I cannot see. We are thrilled to welcome this fine doctor!
Dr. Denise Burns is an experienced Osteopathic Family Practitioner who was one of my teachers in medical school! She has had a successful practice in Syosset for many years and is moving most of her patient care hours to the east end. Dr. Burns is actively involved in osteopathic medical education as Fellowship Program Director at Southampton Hospital. Dr. Burns will be available beginning February 4th for general wellness and hands-on osteopathic manipulation. It is an honor to have her as part of our growing practice. Her skill and experience will be a tremendous addition.
And one final announcement…. As you know, The Suah Center's mission is to help optimize your wellness. While we do not function like a typical primary care facility, we gladly take care of many of your primary care needs. Recently, Primary Care Physician's Assistant Wendy Ross joined us to address your more urgent and primary care needs. Wendy has extensive primary care and emergency room experience and like all of our practitioners, her philosophy is holistic and conservative. Wendy is available for primary care concerns, medication management, sick visits, blood draws, intake testing (such as EKGs and spirometry), and pre-op clearances.
I sincerely hope that this answers some of your questions and that you join me in welcoming these outstanding practitioners to our family. Our website www.thesuahcenter.com and our Facebook page will be updated regularly to reflect any changes but should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out by phone or email.
Thank you for your patience and understanding in this exciting (albeit challenging) time!

With warm regards,
Dr. Hugelmeyer

Practice

What you are about to experience is, we hope, dramatically different than any other healthcare practice you have encountered before. In this introduction we'd like to let you know what you can expect from our relationship and why this practice model will help you achieve optimal wellness. As a field, osteopathy is a healthcare philosophy that the body is a unit and must be allowed to heal itself. We as physicians can aid in that process, but that even if left alone, the tendency is toward homeostasis and balance. Barriers to health, healing, and proper function include poor nutrition, trauma, toxins, stress, infection, and poor overall health. My approach to this natural process is to assist the structure of the body so that it may heal properly and regain its intended function. I do so by gentle hands-on treatments (OMT) but also by taking a detailed history so that we can identify and modify external influences and stressors that may be contributing to your disease process or injury.

The initial evaluation will take place with one of our osteopathic physicians. We will spend some time getting to know your medical, surgical, medication, family, social and functional lifestyle history as they are crucial in understanding why you are the way you are. The history is also helpful in developing treatment plans that will work for you. We will ask you to do a self-assessment in the areas of physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. We will then perform a thorough structural exam looking for areas of asymmetry, muscle spasm, tissue texture changes, inflammation, fluid retention, abnormal range of motion. After the initial exam, you will most likely receive a whole body treatment aimed at restoring symmetry and reducing overall stress on the body and mind. Together we will examine your self-assessment, set goals for the various aspects of your life and develop a plan to help you achieve those goals. We will also develop a plan that will include other synergistic techniques and practices. These include vitamin supplementation, acupuncture, reiki, reflexology, medical massage, exercise and nutrition evaluations, physical therapy, counseling, palliative care, hypnotherapy, special classes and workshops. In doing so, we attack your medical, physical and emotional problems from every angle giving us the best chance for success.

At the end of your visit, you will be given health literature regarding your condition and/or medications/supplements. We will send you an email invitation to log into our Patient Health Record so that you can see certain aspects of your medical chart. You will have the opportunity to learn more about other practitioners in the group, set your schedule for follow-up and sign up for any classes or workshops that interest you. You will be able to contact your physician or our nurse practitioner in between visits if you have any questions. Our website also contains important follow-up information and videos. All of the practitioners involved in your care meet regularly to update one another on your progress. Dr. Hugelmeyer will also be sending a consult letter or progress note to your primary care doctor so that he or she is aware of our plan. The relationship we form at the first visit lays the foundation for a successful wellness program. We appreciate you trusting us to care for you and your family.
